What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done while reading? Walked the dog? Brushed your teeth? Cooked supper? Splashed in the waves at the beach?Well, I'm not exactly sure what qualifies as crazy. I've tried to read while cooking many, many times. It's less than satisfactory.
And… were there any repercussions? Would you do it again?
People tend to get grouchy when their food is boiling over, splattering everywhere, or cooked too long. I'm no exception, even if I'm the guilty party.
So: reading while cooking is not a good idea. Unless it's a cookbook. But even then I have to be careful or I'll be combining two dissimilar recipes that shouldn't be combined. (Anyone else reminded of that Friends episode where Rachel mixes Shepherd's Pie and Trifle? I've never actually done anything that gross but I feel like's it been a close run thing a time or two.)
I also must admit that as a younger reader I attempted to perfect my "reading while walking" skills. Combine that with my inherent gracefulness (cough) and you can understand why my shins were always bruised.
As to other possibly risky reading situations: no. I have a strict "magazines only" anywhere near water. As much as I would love to relax in a bubble bath with a book, I can't imagine that scenario turning out well for me, and that would destroy all the possibly relaxing qualities of that activity.
What about you?
